PEER 1 Hosting delivers green data centre to Portsmouth clients

CBR Staff Writer Published 27 July 2011

Uses Excool cooling technology and has a capacity of 20,000 servers

PEER 1 Hosting, an online IT hosting provider, is offering a predicted PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) rating of 1.1 to customers of its new data centre in Portsmouth, UK.

PEER 1 Hosting in association with UK based cooling technology specialist Excool will deliver this second data centre in the UK for managed hosting, dedicated hosting, cloud and co-location, all under one roof.

The Portsmouth facility will be connected to PEER 1's wholly owned 10Gb network. The company has one more site in Fleet, Hampshire.

PEER 1 Hosting's new facility has a capacity for approximately 1,020 normal cabinet equivalents (NCE) for co-location or 20,000 servers for managed and dedicated hosting, to offer a flexible mix of hybrid hosting services.

The Excool cooling technology uses indirect adiabatic cooling through a modular external design. Indoor air is cooled by indirectly transferring the heat to the outdoor air through Excool's unique and highly efficient heat exchange system and low energy fans.

PEER 1 Hosting EMEA managing director Dominic Monkhouse said partnering with Excool was an easy decision that will enable their clients to reach their energy efficiency targets and prepare for the Carbon Reduction Commitment later this year.

"Our new data centre gives customers a real enterprise-class alternative to Rackspace, with the added bonus that we can offer the best possible energy efficiency for their business," Monkhouse said.

Three Excool units are planned to be installed by PEER 1 Hosting this year, with extra units coming online as each of the five data centre pods are rolled out.

Excool sales director Mark Collins said Excool they're delighted to see Excool go live with PEER 1 and they expect to see healthy customer interest in the country's most power efficient data centre as a result.
