Kitware launches Midas server as open source

Allows users to customise and install Midas at their site

Kitware, a company that builds open source platforms, said that it is opening up the main infrastructure of Midas under a nonrestrictive license allowing users to install the Midas server on location and build on top of the platform for free.

According to Kitware, the Midas is a multi-media server optimised for storing scientific data and related metadata reports. It integrates multimedia server technology with its open-source data analysis and visualisation clients and follows open standards for data storage, access and harvesting. The data publication system supports the emergence of data-centric computing.

A variety of data access methods are provided including web, file system, and Dicom server interfaces. Local, centralised and distributed batch processing is provided through a scripting language that has been specialised for statistical hypothesis testing. Kitware can customise and install Midas at a user’s site or host user data and provide computational resources using its own Midas installation.

Julien Jomier, technical leader at Kitware, said: “The type of collaboration and development we have seen with OSA’s ISP has shifted our approach to Midas making it even easier to access the server needed for such open and available datasets. Free access to information and data using novel software technology and systems further promotes Kitware’s efforts to advance publishing systems for open science.”
