IBM has launched a virtual data center to enable organizations to manage and improve data center energy efficiency.
The company said Virtual Green Data Center, VGDC, is the world's first interactive green data center. It allows organizations to use avatars to explore the green data center by taking a self-guided, individual, or group tour.
The VGDC is in line with IBM's $1 billion initiative announced last year to address the issue of energy efficiency in IT environments. As part of this initiative, IBM implemented a scalable green data center earlier this month for Vietnam-based Saigon Commercial Bank, and in August, it invested nearly $400m to set up two data centers in the US and Japan.
Joanne Bald, program director at ibm.com 3-D Internet, said: The VGDC is as green as it gets. It allows our customers and potential clients to interact with IBM's green portfolio in a very environmentally friendly way. No airplanes burning fuel or rental cars, not even the hassle and time of travel arrangements.
