Dell plans to reveal a set of energy efficient servers that run on Nano chip from Via Technologies. The system places 12 full servers running on Nano chip in a 3.5-inch-high case.
The new server is called the XS11-VX8. Each server would consume 15 to 30 watts of power or about one-tenth the power of a standard server, reported The New York Times.
The Dell product suits web hosting functions which are lighter-weight computing tasks. It’s very rare to find the Via chips in a major-league server, till now the Nano product was aimed mostly at cheaper computers like small laptops.
The Nano chips can run advanced operating system software (64-bit) and handle virtualisation tasks. Running at 1.3 gigahertz or 1.6 gigahertz, the Via chips are low at performance totem pole when it comes to server chips but the chip’s low speed helps in power consumption.
Epan Wu, senior director of chip marketing at Via, said: “This one is a big, major win for us.”
